The first 1,000 cars will be out under the limited edition “Signature Series”. It features a 42 kWh lithium-ion battery which sends power to an electric motor that enables the Model S to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds. The top speed offered is 125 mph (201 km/h) and it travels up to 300 miles (483 km) on a single charge.

Nothing about the price of the auto has been confirmed though. However the Standard Model S 300M costs approximately $77,400 where as the 230M and 160M cost $67,400 and $57,400 respectively. All these variants will be eligible for a $7,500 U.S. government tax credit.

If it wasn’t for the spicy price tag, the new Tesla Model S would be a hot seller. Announed just a couple of months ago, the electric supercar is rumored to have at least 1,000 orders in queue. A 5+2 sedan (yes, 7 people, exactly), this electric vehicle is capable of jumping from 0 to 60mph in only 5.6 seconds and can go for a 300 miles distance if on a full charge. For the moment, Tesla Model S can be ordered for a (refundable) reservation fee of $5,000 while the total amount (including the $7,500 federal tax credit for fully electrical vehicles) goes to a good $49,900. I’m sure we’d look good behind the wheel for such an amazing ride …

Electric seems to be the way forward with cars and Tesla has just announced that it will start production of their Tesla Model S by the third quarter of 2011. That is great news for auto enthusiasts who would prefer practicality and efficiency over sheer power and pace as the Model S is equipped with a battery pack made up of 8,000 cells, giving it a range of about 300 miles, top speed of 120 mph and 0-60 acceleration in 5.6 seconds. The car has plenty of room for people and for storage with the batteries housed on the floor and it can comfortably accommodate five adults and a couple of kids. With a drag coefficient of just 0.27 and weighing just 1735 Kg, Tesla has tried hard to increase its efficiency with better design and lighter frame. Set to be priced at $49,900, this is a great buy in any way you look at it!
