The premium unit of German brand Volkswagen, Audi is famous for its unmatched interiors and not just us, but even GM seems conscious of this fact. GM’s Vice President of Global Engineering, Karl Stracke is the one who has gone public with his viewpoints regarding the Audi interiors quality. As per Karl, GM is fast-improving the quality of its interiors but it is still to meet the benchmark set by Audi. Karl mentioned that he recently drove the Corvette Grand Sport and he did like the performance but what did not convince him were the interiors. GM is putting in serious efforts to improve the quality of interiors and the company has recently started a program that lets the company engineers test competitor’s products every Friday at the Milford Proving Grounds.

The diesel variant also gets a power hike where its TDi engine can now churn 395hp with up to 880Nm of torque. Extra power brings in better braking courtesy of larger ventilated steel disc brakes. The suspension has also been lowered (40 to 80mm) albeit, it returns to the standard levels when traveling at 80mph. Minor exterior modifications include a new front end that has larger air inlets along with front fender outlets and even the side sills have been redesigned. On the rear, the Hofele Design 2010 Audi A8 gets a remodeled bumper and a quad exhaust.

Pretty lightweight but packed with goodies, the new Audi A8 is in direct competitor to the BMW 7 Series, with Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Lexus LS and Jaguar XJ considered as secondary rivals. The new technology advances installed in the car include the new-generation MMI system, the latest quattro AWD system and the regenerative brakes. As for what sends power to the wheels, a wide range of engine is available, out of the which a 184kW (250hp), 550Nm 3.0 TDI engine or the 4.2 petrol V8 that churns 274kW (373hp) and 445Nm of torque.

The new A8 from Audi was revealed last night in Miami. The design looks pure Audi – very understated, classy. If there is anything negative to say it is probably that the new A8 looks a bit boring. Nothing inspiring about it and looks like a bigger A4.

One would think that as the flagship of the Audi range the A8 would be something special, but as car designs go it looks like Audi is stuck in automotive groundhog day with it’s saloon cars.

The interior looks cluttered and it doesn’t really look like the neatest place to be with a whole host of buttons all over the place, no doubt to control every conceivable feature known to man. Still, that’s no excuse to create such a chaotic environment for it’s passengers when we’ve seen so many automakers move away from the button overload from a few years back so efficiently.

All in all then first impressions isn’t that great.

4 different materials and design lines meet at this joint (wood inlay, aluminum inlay, leather dash, and plastics) and must line up on the door and the dashboard for the interior design to flow around the passengers. A compromised solution could have been to change the design to simplify manufacturing, but Audi showcases its quality in the A8 in many such ways.
• Next-generation MMI 3G+ Multi Media Interface with innovative ‘MMI Touch’.
o The industry-first MMI Touch recognizes handwriting for entering Navigation destinations, and is backlit to allow it to change to a pointer for map functions, a number pad for radio functions and can be used to scroll lists in the MMI. Official figures/specifications for the A8 are not yet available, however, the new A8 will weigh about the same as the current A8, even though the car is bigger (3 in. longer, 2 in. wider) and has more standard equipment (8-speed auto transmission, pre sense basic, keyless go, power trunk, etc.) Versus competitors: ~50lbs less than S Class RWD, and >200lbs less than S Class AWD; >200lbs less than 7 Series RWD and >400lbs less than 7 Series AWD.

Who are the A8 customers? A8 customers are highly affluent consumers with a median income close to $500,000, and are most likely worth over $1,000,000. Median age is around 58, which is similar to the BMW 7 Series, and younger than the S Class and Lexus LS. They are highly educated, with almost half having a post-graduate level degree, and are mostly married with few children still in the household. They enjoy traveling, both domestic (e.g. skiing/spa) and international (e.g. Italy/France). Slated for an early debut next year at the Detroit Auto Show, the 2011 Audi A8 is one of the most thought-after luxury sedans. Caught testing on the Nurburgring circuit, rumors have it that the upcoming model comes with new engines. Apparently there’s the new 6.5L V12 which replaces the 6.1L variant for a monsterish output of over 500 horsies, or the supercharged V8 capable of churning 400 hp. Mileage is also on the priority list for Audi which means the new A8 lineage will also include a 2.0L diesel option mated with twin turbos that sport some 200hp. I’m going to apologize for not bringing any Audi RS5 news, but believe me the confirmed sketches for the new A5 Cabrio & Sportback, A7 and next A8 are just as juicy. You already know how the first one looks, I’m talking about A5 Cabrio and A5 sportback but I bet the other two are a nice addition. Audi A7 is a large four-door, that looks a lot like the A5 sportback but with a normal trunk instead of a rear hatch, while the next-gen Audi A8 is much different than what we knew before, with angry eyes headlights and a sharp grille.
