I have been driving (legally) for over five years. One would think I would have noticed the little secret on my dash that was staring me right in the face the whole time. I didn’t and I bet you probably haven’t either.
I’m going to share with you my little secret so you will no longer look like Ace Ventura on your way to the gas station or put your neck at risk of uncomfort or injury.
If you look at your gas guage, you will see a small icon of a gas pump. The handle of the gas pump will extend out on either the left or right side of the pump. If your tank is on the left, the handle will be on the left. If your tank is on the right, the handle will be on the right (see photo below). It is that simple!

Cool. Ive also noticed that your tank is also on the same side as ur wiper control arm and opposite side of your indicator control arm.
So, if you drive a German or itallian car, your indicator control arm will be on the left and fuel tank on the right. Same side as ur wiper controls.
Also the cars exhaust tailpipe is the opposite side of the tank. Unless it has twin tailpipes of course.
October 17, 2007 11:03 amI’ve heard this recently myself. Although it doesn’t always pan out to be right. I have a friend who owns a Chevy Suburban and his gas pump handle on his pump icon is on the right but his gas tank is on the left. I have found that in most cases it proves true. Don’t you know there would be some kind of “exception to the rule”.

Uh,…the pump icon on the 2005 Honda Odyssey also shows the handle on the right but the tank is on the driver’s side (which, is the left if you’re sitting in the car).
October 26, 2007 5:34 pmrec’d email about your article. checked our Avalon Toyota 08 – guage shows handle on right yet gas tank is on the driver’s side – left side if you’re sitting in car. Mfg calls the driver side the left side, as if door is open it shows left door ajar. Statement is inaccurate. NOTE: the icon of pump does have an error
pointing to the left, though the handle shows on the right of icon pump.

Haha, an interesting observation! Is there some requirement that makes car manufacturers do so, or is it purely a function of aesthetics? I wonder…
