Round 5, National Drag Racing Championship

Tarlton Raceway Time Boards

Round 5 of the National Drag Racing Championship was held at Tarlton Raceway on the 5th of August. All in all it was a fantastic day filled with thrills and spills, and of course in the end, good drag racing with a total of 8 new records set on the day.

The fastest time of the day was set by Mick van Rensburg in a Jet Dragster, yes, a Jet Dragster, he flew over the line with a blistering 6.889 seconds at a speed of 408 km/h.

Now with handicapped racing it is hard to say who ran the fastest times in the other classes. Handicapped racing is designed to make the racing closer by giving slower drag racers a head start (measured by a dial-in run done at the beginning of the day). So in theory you can have a really slow time but if you run consistently, you can win.

With all that explained the winner of the Super Street 4 Cylinder class was the driver of an Audi S3, Preggie Govender, with a time of 13.712 seconds. The winner of the Stock Street class, Phillip Nel, ran a mild 15.116 seconds in his VW Golf followed by Riana Botha in her Ford Fiesta ST with a time of 16.664 seconds.

An interesting bit of information is that Phillip Palmer in his A-Dragster won his group with a very fast time of 7.579 seconds, only a tenth of a second faster than second place Mike Sargeant in his A-Funny Car and only just over a tenth of a second slower than the Jet Dragster contolled by Nico van Rensburg.

Quinton Claassen beat Fransie Engelbrecht, one of South Africa’s most reputable motorbike dragsters. Quinton won the Pro-Street Bikes class with a time of 8.752 seconds.

One of the most exciting parts of the day, and really finished off a good days worth of racing was the meltdown. This is when a scrap car is chained down behind a Jet Car and the Jet Car lets loose its fire of fury. This is an amazing site at night, something you would all love to be at.
